Der Westland WG.13 wurde Mitte der 1960er Jahre als Ersatz für den Westland

Scout und den Westland Wasp sowohl bei der British Army als auch der Royal

Navy entwickelt. Der Westland Lynx war der letzte der drei Hubschrauber, die

unter der britisch-französischen Kooperationsvereinbarung von 1967 entstand.

Der halbstarre Rotor war ein wichtiges Konstruktionsmerkmal, das eine hohe

Wendigkeit und gute Handhabung für den Einsatz von Schiffen aus bewirken

sollte. Der Lynx in der seetauglichen Version war von Anfang an für den Einsatz

von kleinen Fregatten aus vorgesehen, und die dank des halbstarren Rotors aus-

gezeichnete Manövrierfähigkeit, das von Westland entwickelte Deck-

Verankerungssystem und hoch energieabsorbierende Fahrwerk haben zu weilt-

weitem Erfolg geführt.

Der Lynx HAS.3 war die zweite Anti-U-Boot-Variante, die von der Royal Navy

entwickelt und genutzt wurde, mit Verbesserungen im Antrieb und der

Transmission. Zwischen März 1982 und April 1985 wurden 23 Flugzeugzellen aus-

geliefert, die mit zwei Rolls-Royce Gem 41-1-Wellenturbinen mit je 835 kW

Leistung und einem GEC-Marconi „Seaspray“-Radar in der abgeänderten Nase

ausgestattet waren. 53 Stück der älteren Version Lynx HAS.2 wurden bis 1989

auf den Standard der HAS.3 umgebaut sowie zu einer weiteren verbesserten

Version mit der Bezeichnung HAS.3S. Beim Lynx HAS.Mk 3 ICE handelt es sich um

den HAS.3, bei demauf einige Ausrüstungskomponenten verzichtet wurde. Für

Einsätze allgemeiner Art auf dem in der Antarktis eingesetzten Überwachungs-

schiff HMS Endurance wurden drei Hubschrauber umgebaut, davon zwei zu

HAS.3S ICE. Lynx HAS.3 GM war die inoffzielle Bezeichnung für 19 modifizierte

Lynx-Helikopter, die von der Royal Navy in der „Operation Granby“ (Operation

Wüstensturm, „Operation Desert Storm“) geflogen wurden und die mit einem

besonders gesicherten Kommunikationssystem, taktischen Navi gati ons -

programmen und einem ESM ausgerüstet waren.

Gemäß einer Vereinbarung zwischen Finmeccanica SpA Italien und der GKN PLC

Großbritannien aus dem Jahr 2001 liegen Herstellung und Vertrieb des Lynx nun

bei Agusta-Westland.

The Westland WG.13 was developed in the mid-1960s as a replacement for the

Westland Scout and Westland Wasp in the British Army and Royal Navy service

respectevely. The Westland Lynx was the last of the three helicopters involved in

the 1967 British-French collaborative deal. The semi rigid rotor was an important

feature, intended to offer high manoeuvrability and good handling for ship-

borne operations. The maritime Lynx was designed from the beginning to oper-

ate from small frigates, the excellent handling available through the semi rigid

rotor and the Westland deck lock and high energy absorbing landing gear have

resulted in worldwide success.

The Lynx HAS.3 was the second anti-submarine variant developed and used by

the Royal Navy wich had an uprated powerplant and transmission; equipped

with two 835kW Rolls-Royce Gem 41-1 turboshaft engines and a GEC-Marconi

‘Seaspray’ radar in modified nose, twenty-three airframes were delivered

between March 1982 to April 1985. Fifty-Three older Lynx HAS.2s were convert-

ed to the HAS.3 standard by 1989 with a further improved variant designated as

the HAS.3S. Lynx HAS. Mk 3 ICE is the HAS.3 which lacks some operational equip-

ment for general duties aboard Antarctic survey vessel, HMS Endurance, three

were converted, of which two are as HAS.3S ICE. The Lynx HAS.3 GM was an

unofficial designation for nineteen modified Royal Navy operated Lynxes used

during ‘Operation Granby’ (‘Operation Desert Storm’) fitted with a secure com-

munication and tactical navigation suites and an ESM fit.

Since 2001 as a result of the agreement drawn up by Finmeccanica SpA of Italy

and GKN PLC in the UK the Lynx is now produced and marketed by Agusta-

Westland.
