Seit 1973 steht der mittlere Transporthubschrauber (MTH) CH-53G im Dienst der deutschen

Heeresfliegerverbände. Bis 1975 beschaffte die Bundeswehr insgesamt 112 Maschinen, von

denen 110 bei VFW-Fokker in Speyer in Lizenz produziert wurden. Im Rahmen der Umstruk -

turierung der Bundeswehr ist die MTH-Flotte des Heeres seit Anfang 2013 mit 80

Einsatzmaschinen im Hubschraubergeschwader 64 für den taktischen Lufttransport von

Personen, Material und für Sonderaufgaben der Luftwaffe in den Standorten Laupheim und

Holzdorf/Schönwalde zusammengefasst worden und soll bis 2030 im Dienst verbleiben. Dann

werden die Hubschrauber eine Nutzungsdauer von 55 Jahren erreicht haben. Eurocopter in

Donauwörth hatte 2006 mit dem Projekt “Produktverbesserung CH-53G” begonnen, alle not-

wendigen Maßnahmen zur umfassenden Überholung des Rumpfes -um der Werkstoffermü -

dung der Zelle vorzubeugen- und der Modernisierung der Flugsteuerungs- und Navigations -

systeme festzulegen. Bis 2015 werden 40 Maschinen zur Version CH-53GA (German

Advanced) überholt und neu ausgerüstet. Dazu kommen noch jeweils 20 Hubschrauber der

Versionen CH-53GE und CH-53GS. Die Rumpfstruktur der Maschinen wird für eine Nutzungs -

dauer von 10.000 Flugstunden tauglich gemacht. Dies war notwendig geworden, um die Zeit

bis zur Einführung eines zukünftigen Nachfolgemodells zu überbrücken. Beim CH-53GA wird

eine satellitengestützte Navigations- und Kommunikationselektronik (SatCom) eingebaut, um

den gemeinsamen Einsatz mit dem NH-90 und dem Kampfhubschrauber Tiger zu ermöglichen

und die Navigationsgenauigkeit zu erhöhen. Ebenfalls neu ist die Avionik mit “Glascockpit”,

Farbmonitoren und einem automatischen Flugkontrollsystem mit Vierachsen-Autopilot und

automatisierter Schwebeflug-Funktion zur Verbesserung der allgemeinen Flugsicherheit. Dank

einer modularen Missionsausstattung sind die Maschinen für verschiedene Einsatzprofile ein-

rüstbar. Eine Infrarot-Sichtanlage (Forward Looking Infrared) erleichtert die Arbeit der Piloten

bei Nacht und ermöglicht Tiefflug-Missionen. Ein Electronic Warfare System (EWS) dient zur

Selbstverteidigung. Ein zusätzlicher interner Treibstofftank ermöglicht nun eine Reichweite

von 1.200 km ohne Aussentanks. Im Bedarfsfall lässt sich eine “Fast Roping”-Ausstattung ein-

bauen. Außerdem werden die Hubschrauber mit dem leistungsstärkeren Triebwerk T64-GE-

100 ausgerüstet. Der erste fertiggestellte CH-53GA hob am 29. Januar 2010 ab. Mit der

Umschulung der zukünftigen Besatzungen war im April 2012 in Donauwörth begonnen wor-

den. Die offizielle Übergabe des ersten CH-53GA von Eurocopter an die Bundeswehr erfolgte

im Rahmen einer Veranstaltung auf der ILA 2012 in Berlin. Mit seiner Ladekapazität von fünf-

einhalb Tonnen wird der CH-53GA der Bundeswehr auch zukünftig nicht nur militärisch, son-

dern auch bei humanitären Einsätzen und bei der Katastrophenhilfe im In- und Ausland das

wichtigste Lufttransportmittel vor Ort sein. Seine Zuverlässigkeit und Leistungsfähigkeit stellt

der MTH immer wieder unter Beweis. Jüngstes Beispiel sind die Einsätze bei der

Flutkatastrophe in Süd- und Mitteldeutschland Ende Mai bis Anfang Juni 2013.

The German Army CH-53G Medium Transport Helicopter (MTH) has been in service with the

forces since 1973. By 1975, the German Armed Forces had a total of 112 of these helicopters

of which 110 were produced under license VFW-Fokker at Speyer. As part of the restructuring

of the Bundeswehr, the German Army’s MTH Fleet consisting of 80 operational aircraft has,

since the beginning of 2013, been centralised as Helicopter Wing 64 at the airfields of

Laupheim and Holzdorf/Schoenwalde. The CH-53 is expected to remain in service until the

year 2030 providing Tactical Air Transport for men and materials and for specialised aviation

tasks. The helicopter will then have achieved a useful life of 55 years.

In 2006, Eurocopter in Donauwoerth started working on the „Product Improvement Program

CH-53G“. Its aim was to define hull-to all necessary measures required for a comprehensive

overhaul the fuselage in order to prevent material fatigue and to modernize the flight con-

trol and navigation systems. By 2015, forty helicopters will have been overhauled and refitted

to the standard CH-53GA - (German Advanced) in addition to 20 helicopters each of the ver-

sions of CH-53GE and CH-53GS. The helicopters fuselage structure is designed to have a

usable life of 10,000 flying hours. This is necessary in order to bridge the gap until a future suc-

cessor model can be introduced. A satellite-based navigation and communication suite

(SatCom) will be incorporated into the CH-53GA to allow joint operations with the NH-90 and

the new Tiger Combat Helicopter. It will also increase navigation accuracy. New also is the

„Glass Cockpit“ with avionics, colour monitor and an automatic flight control system which

includes four-axis autopilot and an automated hover function to improve general flight safety.

The use of modular mission equipment enables the machines to be quickly converted for dif-

ferent mission profiles. An Infra-red vision system (Forward Looking Infra-red - FLIR) reduces

pilot work-load at night and enables low-level missions. An Electronic Warfare System (EWS) is

incorporated for self-defence. An additional internal fuel tank gives the CH-53 GA a range of

1200 km (745 miles) without external tanks. „Fast Roping“ equipment can be installed if

required and the helicopter will also be fitted with the more powerful T64-GE-100 engines.

The first completed CH-53GA lifted off on 29th January 2010. The crew conversion program

had already at begun in Donauwoerth in April 2012. The official handover of the first CH-

53GA from Eurocopter to the German Army took place at the ILA (International Aerospace

Exhibition) Berlin in 2012.

With a cargo capacity of five and a half tons the “Bundeswehr’s” CH-53GA, will continue to be

the most important mode of “on the spot” means of air transport not only within the military

but also on humanitarian and disaster relief operations both at home and abroad. This MTH

continues to prove its reliability and performance, time and time again. The latest example its

capability was again proven during the disastrous flooding in Central and Southern Germany

during late May and early June of 2013.
