Vor 35 Jahren startete die umgerüstete Boeing 747-123 “Shuttle Carrier Aircraft

905” der amerikanischen Luft- und Raumfahrtbehörde NASA erstmals mit dem

Space Shuttle-Prototypen “Enterprise”. 1977 beginnend gab es 13 Testflüge. Bei

fünf Flügen löste sich der Orbiter von der 747 und landete eigenständig im

Gleitflug. Das Passagierflugzeug, erstmals geflogen im Oktober 1970, war durch

die NASA im gleichen Jahr von American Airlines angekauft und für

Untersuchungen von Wirbelschleppen verwendet worden. 1976 erfolgte bei

Boeing der Umbau zum SCA. Dazu wurden alle Passagiersitze ausgebaut, der

Rumpf verstärkt, die Befestigungspunkte für das Shuttle integriert und an den

Höhenleitwerken zusätzliche Seitenleitwerke angebracht. Erfolgte die Landung

der Raumfähren auf alternativen Landeplätzen, wie den Luftwaffenbasen

Edwards in Kalifornien oder White Sands in New Mexico, führte SCA 905 den

Rücktransport zum Startkomplex am Kennedy Space Center.

Dazu wurde das Shuttle mit einem speziell dafür vorgesehenen Kran, dem

“Mate-Demate Device” auf den Rücken des SCA gehoben und dort verankert.

Da das Gespann nur eine Reichweite von knapp 1.900 km hatte, mussten bei

transkontinentalen Flügen mehrere Zwischenlandungen zum Auftanken einge-

legt werden. Ein solcher Flug kostete rund 1,7 Millionen US-Dollar. Bei einer

Gipfelhöhe von 7.600 m lag die Höchstgeschwindigkeit bei 670 km/h. Für ein-

hundert Flugkilometer benötigte das SCA mit aufgesetztem Shuttle 10.000 Liter

Treibstoff. Bis zur Indienststellung einer zweiten Boeing 747 mit der Kennung

N911NA Ende 1990 hat die “905” alle “piggyback missions” mit den Raumfähren

durchgeführt. Die “911”, gebaut 1973, war 1989 von der Fluggesellschaft Japan

Air Lines angekauft und zum SCA umgebaut worden. Bis zu ihrer Ausmusterung

im Februar 2012 sind mit dieser 747-100 in 21 Jahren 66 “Huckepack”-Flüge aus-

geführt worden. NASA 905 transportierte die “Columbia” 60, die “Challenger” 20

und die “Atlantis” 35 mal. Einschliesslich der Transporte zu Museen in diesem Jahr

hat die Maschine dann mit der “Discovery” 38, mit der “Endeavour” 12 und mit

der “Enterprise” 57 Flüge absolviert. Nach der Landung auf dem Dulles

International Airport am 17. März 2012 wurde die “Discovery” zum “National Air

and Space Museum” in Washington, Virginia gebracht. Eine Woche später flog

die 747 mit der “Enterprise” von dort nach New York, wo die Fähre auf dem

“Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum” ausgestellt werden wird. Ende September

2012 soll noch die “Endeavour” zum Los Angeles International Airport geflogen

werden. Dort wird das Shuttle in der Sammlung des “California Science Center”

Aufnahme finden.

Thirty-five years ago the upgraded Boeing 747-123 "Shuttle Carrier Aircraft 905"

belonging to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA

launched the prototype Space Shuttle "Enterprise". Starting in 1977, there were

13 test flights. During five of these flights, the orbiter broke away from the 747

and landed independently from the glide. First flown in October 1970 the airlin-

er was purchased by NASA from American Airlines in the same year and used for

studies into wake turbulence. The conversion to SCA was undertaken by Boeing

in 1976. During conversion all the passenger seats were removed, the hull was

reinforced, mounting points for the shuttle were installed and additional vertical

stabilizers were attached to the elevators. If the Space Shuttle landed at an alter-

nate aerodrome, such as Edwards Air Force base in California or White Sands,

New Mexico, then the SCA 905 transported it back to the launch pad at the

Kennedy Space Centre. The Shuttle was lifted onto the back of the SCA using a

specially designed crane, the "Mate-Demate Device" and anchored there.

Since the combination only had a range of about 1,900 km, several refuelling

stops were necessary during transcontinental flights. The cost of such a flight

was around 1.7 million dollars. With a service ceiling of 7,600 m the maximum

speed was 670 km/h. For one hundred kilometres of flight with the shuttle

attached the SCA required 10,000 litres of fuel. Until a second Boeing 747 with

the registration N911NA entered service at the end of 1990, the "905" undertook

all "piggyback missions" with the Space Shuttles. Built in 1973 the "911" was pur-

chased from Japan Airlines in 1989 and converted to the SCA role. Up to its

decommissioning in February 2012, the 747-100 had undertaken 66 "piggyback"

missions during 21 years of service. NASA 905 carried the "Columbia" 60 times,

the "Challenger" 20 and the "Atlantis" 35 times. Including transfers to museums

in this year , the aircraft has thus made 38 flights with the "Discovery", 12 with

the "Endeavour" and 57 with the "Enterprise". After landing at Dulles

International Airport on 17 March 2012 the "Discovery" was taken to the

"National Air and Space Museum" in Washington, Virginia. A week later, the 747

flew with the "Enterprise" from there to New York, where the SCA was exhibit-

ed at the "Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum." At the end of September 2012

the "Endeavour" is to be flown to Los Angeles International Airport where the

Shuttle will become a further addition to the collection of "California Science

Centre".
